Securely adding custom environment variables on a free Python bot server

Posted by unknown2324M2 in discord-bots.

Hi! On a free Python Discord bot server, is there a supported way to add a custom environment variable containing an external service credential without displaying, changing, or overwriting any existing variables? The Startup documentation describes editable predefined fields, but I could not confirm whether custom fields or a write only secret option are available. Can staff add one privately, or is there another supported approach? Does adding it require a restart? Please do not ask me to post any tokens or passwords here. I would also appreciate confirmation whether a short Python connectivity probe that does not connect to Discord may run before the existing bot starts. I do not want to change the current bot or startup configuration until I understand the supported procedure. Thank you!

For a free Python server, Startup exposes the environment fields provided by the server configuration; I can’t confirm that arbitrary custom or write only fields can be added, or that staff can add one privately. A practical alternative is a file in the server root and ( ), which leaves existing environment variables untouched. It isn’t write only: anyone with access to the server’s files could read it, so don’t commit or share it. The app reads it when it starts, so restart after changing it. A connectivity probe can run before the bot if you launch a small wrapper that runs the probe and then starts the bot. Check your current Startup command first—custom commands can skip the normal install step. For confirmation about private variable fields, ask on Wispbyte Discord. Startup settings
